From Philadelphia to the backcountry and back in 13 Days.
The Flights: Our entire Liberty Troop expedition will travel together. We will fly out of Philadelphia (PHL) and land in Denver (DEN). We plan on taking an early morning flight at will leave around 6 am to arrive in Denver by 8:30 am to get to Philmont by 1:30 pm. We will have an early fligh so Scouts should bring money to purchase food at the airport. Flight details will be announced upon booking.
The Van Rental: Upon landing in Denver, we will pickup our two 15 passenger vans for the drive down into New Mexico with a stops for bathrooms whenever needed. Lunch will not be provided so Scouts should bring money for our stop in Colorado Springs where there is a Chick-Fil-A, Smashburger, Sandwich Shop, and Pizza Shop.
Early Arrival & Acclimation: Because Philmont’s Base Camp sits at roughly 6,700 feet, we are arriving a full day before our trek officially begins to let our bodies adjust to the altitude. We will use the extra time to explore the Base Camp, trading post, and the museums on the property. We will also attempt to get a tour at the Villa Philmonte, the home of the people who donated the amazing property to Scouting America.
Lodging: We will spend this first night sleeping in backcountry trail tents if no standard Base Camp wall tents are available (as standard Base Camp wall tents are reserved for crews on their official Day 1).
Check-In & Medical: We officially check in and meet our assigned Philmont Rangers. Philmont staff will verify all BSA medical forms and enforce the strict height/weight requirements. (Health & Safety)
Gear Draw & Shakedown: We will draw our shared crew gear (bear ropes, pots, backcountry stoves, dining flies) and conduct a final, rigorous gear shakedown with our Rangers. (Gear & Preparation)
Note: If you are missing any mandatory personal gear, or if your gear does not pass the Ranger's inspection, you will be required to buy replacements at the Tooth of Time Traders before leaving Base Camp.
Opening Campfire: We will end our final night in civilization by attending the famous Philmont Opening Campfire to get hyped for the trail.
The Van Rental: We will drive our two 15 passenger vans for the drive up to Colorado with a stops for bathrooms whenever needed. Lunch will not be provided so scouts should bring money for the airport.
